The 1996 Hawks split their first two games before losing on the road at Cortland. A 4-0 win over NCAA-bound Ithaca followed, which started a 12-game winning streak that took Hartwick to the end of the regular season at 14-1. A pair of victories at home in the NYSWCAA positioned the Hawks into the final, where they avenged their loss to Cortland with a 2-1 victory. At 17-1 and seeded second in the NCAAs, Hartwick hosted the regionals and defeated Middlebury before holding EMU, who was averaging six goals a game, to only two goals in a 3-2 triumph and a berth in the semifinals. At TCNJ, the Hawks defeated Leb Val 3-2, their 18th consecutive win, a streak that led the nation. Hartwick fell to TCNJ in the final; Shelly Hall, Jennifer Motyka, Nicole Rushton and Erin Ross were each named All-Americans.
