NCAA First Round

The 1990 Engineers opened with four consecutive shutouts before a 2-1 win over Amherst broke the consecutive goals streak but kept the winning alive. Undaunted, WPI answered with a run of five consecutive clean sheets before giving up two goals in a win at Mount Holyoke. The Engineers closed the season with a five-game win streak in which they outscored opponents 28-2, giving them a record of 16-0 entering the New 8 Tournament. The Engineers won the semifinal game but the final had to be postponed; as the regular season champions WPI moved on to the NCAA tournament as the only undefeated team in the nation. Reigning champion Lock Haven sent the Engineers to their only defeat of the season and were only the fourth team to score on WPI that year. A week later, WPI defeated Smith for the NEW-8 final to give them a final record of 18-1. Nicky McGowan earned All-American honors for WPI this year.
