The 1996 Lions opened up the season with a seven-game run and a margin of 32-5 before a loss in strokes to Rowan broke a 74-match NJAC winning streak. TCNJ responded with a four-game run in which they outscored opponents 21-3. They won their next three games, all against NCAA-bound opponents, to push their record to 14-1. Two more wins closed out the regular season and the Lions entered the NCAA tournament as the top seed, riding a 10-game winning streak. TCNJ won a pair of games at home to advance to the semifinals, which were held on their campus. In the semifinal, the Lions beat Cortland for the second time that year, before beating Hartwick in the final, marking their fourteenth consecutive win. Seven wins during the season were by shutout and four Lions scored in double digits. Beth Pursell, Melanie Vasoski, Jennifer Maholland and Laura Stryjewski all earned All-American honors.
