The 2016 Falcons opened the season with an overtime loss to Division II Shippensburg, but it would be the last time Messiah would lose all season. The Falcons rattled off 16 consecutive wins, with four wins over teams bound for the NCAA tournament. In the MAC Commonwealth the Falcons opened with a 4-0 victory for their tenth shutout of the season, and won the title three days later to enter into the NCAA tournament as the top seed. A 5-0 win over Keene State was the 11th shutout of the season and the Falcons moved into the semifinals with a 4-2 win over Middlebury. A 5-2 win over Babson put Messiah in the final against Tufts. In the championship game, Messiah and Tufts played to a 0-0 tie through the end of overtime, where the Falcons won in a shootout for their first NCAA title. Carissa Gehman, Lindsey Bower, and Moriah Pfautz earned All-American honors.
