NCAA Runners-Up
The 1993 Eagles opened up the season with three consecutive 2-0 victories. A 2-1 win over Oneonta in the first game of the Salisbury Tournament stopped the shutout streak, but the Eagles picked it right back up in the next game, starting a five-game run that included a 1-0 win over Salisbury on the road. After a 2-1 loss at Eastern Mennonite on the last day of September broke the nine-game winning streak, the Eagles went on another tear. They didn’t lose in the month of October, winning ten straight, with eight of them shutouts. That 25-2 run ended the regular season and sent the Eagles off to the NCAA tournament as the #3 seed. Mary Washington opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Johns Hopkins before back-to-back 1-0 wins over Messiah and second-seed TCNJ moved the Eagles into the final. A 1-0 loss to top-seeded Cortland marked only the seventh goal given up by the Eagle defense. Behind All-Americans Candice Malone and April Moshos, Mary Washington’s GAA of .29 still ranks in the top-five all-time in NCAA Division III history.
