The 1981 Hornets opened up with a pair of shutouts before falling to Division I Virginia 2-0. Undaunted, Lynchburg strung together three more shutouts to advance to the finals of the North-South Invitational, where they fell to Glassboro in the title game. Again the Hornets responded with six straight shutouts before a loss to Mary Washington broke the streak. Two more shutouts sandwiched a tie against Division I James Madison to close out the regular season 13-3-1 with all 13 wins by shutout. The Hornets then swept through the Virginia State tournament, shutting out all three opponents to advance to the Region II tournament. Again, Lynchburg held their opponents off the scoreboard and swept the tournament, heading to the national tournament just 15 miles up the road at Sweet Briar. A shutout over Carleton was the Hornets’ eighth consecutive shutout, and the next day a win over reigning national champion Gettysburg in strokes pushed the streak to over 610 minutes, a streak that remains in the top-six all-time. A shutout over Wooster, the top seed in the tournament, advanced the Hornets to the final and gave them their 21st shutout of the season – the first and as-of-yet only team in Division III history to shutout 20 or more teams in a single season. A 3-2 loss to Bloomsburg ended the season, but Phoebe Phelps and Molly Brogan earned All-American honors for the Hornets.
