The 2005 River Hawks had hosted the last two national championships, but the trip to Shippensburg for the semifinals and finals proved to be very fruitful as UML won its first NCAA title in school history. It was an inauspicious start as the River Hawks opened the season 2-2, but then put together a 16-game win streak. Behind All-Americans Joanna DaLuze, Sara Hohenberger, Josselyn Mroz, Courtney Hill and Kim Villare, UML outscored their opponents 51-13 in that stretch. Despite losing in the NE-10 final, UMass-Lowell were the #1 seed in the north and defeated Stonehill one week after the NE-10 final, and then knocked off reigning champion Bloomsburg in overtime.
