AIAW Champions

The 1979 Bears started with a win and a tie before notching five straight shutouts, outscoring opponents 33-0. A 1-0 loss on the road was followed by 10 straight wins, with eight consecutive shutouts in the middle for an aggregate score of 42-3. A 2-1 loss closed out the regular season, but the Bears entered postseason on a tear. They won four straight games in the MAIAW Tournament, not conceding a goal. In the Region VI tournament, the Bears posted four more wins, outscoring opponents 18-1 and headed to the AIAW national championships as the top seed. In nationals, Southwest Missouri State went 4-0 for their third consecutive post-season tournament, posting a 13-1 scoring barrage and winning the first national championship in school history. Chris Dufner closed out her collegiate career with a still-standing record of 199 goals, including 69 in that championship season, and was named an All-American.
