The 1978 Bears went through the regular season undefeated and untied, outscoring their opponents 23-5 over the 20 games, including a 5-1 defeat of St. Louis, who finished 5th at nationals that year. The streak continued in the post season as SWMS won a pair of games in the MAIAW tournament before losing 1-0 in overtime to Central Missouri, the Bears’ first loss of the year. After rebounding to win 3rd place, the AIAW gave 23-1 Southwest Missouri an at-large bid to the regional tournament, where SWMS went 5-0 over the first two days, including beating St. Louis for a second time in the season. In the final game, the Bears fell to St. Louis 1-0, ending the season for Southwest Missouri State despite holding one of the top records in the country.
