The 1981 Falcons were ranked #1 in the nation in every poll that season; all of their losses were to Division I teams. In fact, Pfeiffer defeated UNC 1-0 in the middle of the season in the midst of a four-game shutout streak behind freshman Karen Oakley in the goal. The Falcons hosted both rounds of the first NCAA field hockey championship, with Roseann DeTomasso scoring in overtime in the semifinals, sending Pfeiffer to the title game. There, Carol Whitehouse powered the Falcons to the title, scoring a still-standing record four goals in a 5-3 victory.
