Led by Gaile Smith’s school-record 28 goals and Mariann Schrieber’s school-record 21 assists and a school record 16 shutouts in 23 games, West Chester won its fourth consecutive national title in 1978. The team leapt out to a 11-0-1 start before suffering its first loss in four years—a 73-game streak, the longest in Division I history. The Rams responded with eight consecutive wins in the post season, outscoring their opponents 29-3 to win the Mid-Atlantic Tournament and the AIAW Championship for the fourth consecutive year. Captain Karen Shelton was named the Honda Award recipient for the third consecutive year.
