The 1994 Tar Heels opened with a win, which started a shutout streak of 580:31 that included seven consecutive shutouts. A double-OT win over Maryland kept the winning going, and UNC notched two more shutouts before an overtime loss to UMass halted the streak at 11. Six more wins, the last three by shutout, sent the Heels into the ACC tournament, which they won, and they were the top seed in the NCAA tournament after posting a 19-1 record that was highlighted by a defense that allowed only 10 goals all season long behind freshman Jana Withrow. Withrow tied the UNC goals-against record. In the field, All-Americans Barbara Hansen, Cindy Werley and Sharon Moore led the way for the Tar Heels, whose only losses were in overtime all season long. UNC posted 15 shutouts in 1994, including a 3-0 victory at James Madison, their opponent in the final. The title game went to penalty strokes for the second consecutive year, and JMU converted four of the five strokes to claim the title.
