NCAA 3rd place

The 1986 Tar Heels split their first two games, but a 2-0 shutout of BC started a 13-game winning streak to close out the regular season, posting seven clean sheets in that run. Two wins in the ACC tournament gave the Heels both the ACC regular season and tournament crowns. After splitting a pair of games with Davis & Elkins and Northwestern in preparation for the NCAA tournament, UNC still earned the top seed in NCAAs. Led by Maryellen Falcone, Lori Bruney, and Tracey Yurgin, the Tar Heels held opponents to under a goal per game while averaging four goals per game. Two of Carolina’s losses that came to NCAA Runner-up New Hampshire; after losing to the Wildcats in the semifinals, the Tar Heels rebounded to win the third place game in the NCAA tournament.
