The 2012 Tar Heels opened with a pair of wins before an overtime loss on the road at Syracuse put them at 2-1 to start the season. That ignited a 16-game winning streak to close out the regular season, and the Heels tacked on three more in the ACC tournament, giving them both the tournament and regular season crown. Named the top seed in the NCAA tournament after losing only one game in the regular season, they beat the Orange 6-1 in the semifinals in a revenge match and advanced to the NCAA finals where they fell to Princeton. Led by USA veterans Kelsey Kolojejchick, Caitlin Van Sickle and Emily Wold, and Charlotte Craddock, the Tar Heels averaged a school-record 4.56 goals per game.
