The 2009 Tar Heels opened with a pair of wins in the opening weekend, and a 4-1 win over Wake Forest started a streak of 58 consecutive goals that included a shutout streak of 690:45 that included nine consecutive shutouts. A loss to Maryland halted a 15-game winning streak, and a loss to Virginia in the ACC tournament sent the Heels to the NCAA tournament as the #2 seed. Led by Olympian Jackie Kintzer in the cage, UNC allowed only .68 goals per game that season. Offensively, the Tar Heels were led by All-Americans Katelyn Falgowski, Kelsey Kolojejchick, Ilse Davids and Danielle Forword. They beat the top-seeded and previously undefeated Terrapins in the final, scoring twice in the final five minutes after Karen Shelton pulled Kintzer in favor of an extra field player.
