San Jose State 1980

17-3

GAA: .65 GPG: 3.05 MOV: 2.40

AIAW 4th place

The 1980 Spartans jumped out to a fast start, winning the first six games of the season by an aggregate score of 26-1, including two shutouts of reigning national champion Long Beach. A loss to Chico State only served to energize the team, who responded with a nine-game streak with a total score of 19-2, including five consecutive shutouts and a third win over a top-five team in LBSU. The win over the 49ers in the regional final was costly, however, as two-time All-American Pommy Macfarlane tore her ACL. San Jose went in as the top seed at AIAW with a 15-1 record, and advanced to the semifinals. There, the Spartans lost to Cal for the first time in four meetings in 1980 in a double-OT game, and then fell to Delaware in another double-OT game.
