AIAW Champions

The 1981 Nittany Lions opened the season with five straight wins, the middle three by shutout. A tie against eventual NCAA champion UConn stopped them briefly, but Penn State outscored opponents 12-1 over the next three games before Temple won 3-2. A seven-game streak ensued, four by shutout, and a loss to Delaware halted the run in the EAIAW tournament. As the second seed with a 16-2-1 record Penn State outscored their three opponents 11-2 in the tournament, including a 5-1 upset of top seed Temple, to win their second consecutive national title. Brenda Stauffer earned All-American honors; she was joined on the All-Tournament team by the all-time leader in Penn State scoring, senior Candy Finn. Finn and Stauffer both set records in scoring that still stand that season, with Finn notching 34 goals and Stauffer 31 assists.
