NCAA Champions

The 1992 Lady Monarchs opened with five shutouts before a goal by Richmond in a 12-1 victory stopped the run. Undeterred, ODU ran off six consecutive shutouts before a 7-1 victory over Duke halted that shutout streak. The Lady Monarchs then sandwiched a set of three straight clean sheets around a 2-1 triumph over #3 Penn State – the only time an opponent came within one goal of ODU the entire season in the final score. A 10-1 victory over JMU in the CAA first round would be the last time ODU opponent found the back of the net. The Lady Monarchs allowed only four goals all season, outscoring their opponents 163-4. For the first time in NCAA Division I history, a team averaged over six goals a game; in fact, ODU failed to score four goals in a game in only four games. Led by Honda honoree Kelli James and fellow All-Americans Robin Smith, Maaike Hilbrand, Laura Knorr and Jill Reeve, the Lady Monarchs outscored their opponents 15-0 in the tournament, tying the record from 1984 for margin in a tournament (5.0 gpg) and the 1990 team for fewest goals allowed. The 21 shutouts is still an NCAA record for both total shutouts and percentage (84%), and the 163 total goals, 6.52 goals per game, and .16 GAA are all still NCAA records.
