NCAA Champions

The 1990 Lady Monarchs did not allow a goal in their first two games but still sat at 1-0-1 after the opening weekend. They rattled off six straight wins, outscoring opponents 23-2 with four shutouts before a loss to UNC. That loss ignited a five-game shutout streak that saw the Lady Monarchs outscore their opponents 31-0. A 6-1 win over Virginia pushed the win streak to six, but another loss to UNC made their record 13-2-1. Seven more wins closed the regular season. ODU won a nation-leading 20 games in the regular season, but they were seeded behind UNC. The Lady Monarchs conceded only twelve goals in the regular season, one that included seven wins over teams bound for the NCAA tournament. In the tournament, the Lady Monarchs became the first team to win the title without conceding a goal. Led by All-Americans Kelli James, Pam Neiss, and Winnifred Sanders, ODU outscored their opponents 10-0 in the NCAAs that included a 5-0 defeat of UNC in the championship tilt as Maacha van der Vaart scored four of those goals, a record that still stands.
