The 1989 Lady Monarchs opened with a shutout and won their next three games. The 3-1 win over New Hampshire started a shutout streak that lasted more than 650 minutes and set a still-standing national record of nine consecutive shutouts. A loss to UNC ended both the win and shutout streaks, but a pair of wins was followed by a second shutout streak; this one lasted 592:15 over nine games. The Lady Monarchs were the top seed in the tournament after posting a 22-1 regular season that included six wins over teams in the field, led by All-Americans Carolyn Sarr and Lisa Doran. The Lady Monarchs needed a 75th-minute goal—the latest first goal in a game in tournament history—to defeat Northwestern in the semifinals, but they advanced to the title game for the sixth time in nine years.
