NCAA Champions

The 1984 Lady Monarchs put together the first undefeated season in NCAA Division I field hockey history, claiming their third consecutive title with a squad that beat their opponents by an average of over five goals per game. They started the season with five shutouts in their first six games and posted 14 shutouts over the season. The 20 regular season wins included six wins over the 12-team field. Behind Honda honoree Christy Morgan and fellow All-Americans Diane Bracalente, Evaline Veraat, Cindy Wallace, Willemien Aardenburg and Cheryl Van Kuren, ODU’s defense allowed only eight goals in the regular season and scored at least that many in a single game six times. One of those games was a 10-0 win over Virginia in the second round, records for goals and margin that still stand. The Lady Monarchs also set records for most shots in a championship (35), most penalty corners in a game (31, v. Virginia), and scoring average in the tournament (5.7).
