NCAA Champions

The 1983 Lady Monarchs opened with six straight clean sheets before a 5-1 defeat of Lafayette stopped the shutout streak that lasted over 450 minutes. ODU sandwiched a pair of shutouts around a 3-1 win over Temple before suffering what would be their only loss of the year, a 1-0 defeat to UConn. Six straight victories closed out the regular season, with four by shutout. Behind All-Americans Christy Morgan, Adele Meas and Evaline Veraat, ODU was seeded second in the tournament. The Lady Monarchs opened up against UNC and defeated them 8-0 before surrendering two goals for the first time in 1983 against UMass, but the Lady Monarchs outlasted them with a goal in OT to advance to the final. In the rematch against UConn, the teams were tied at the end of regulation, but the Lady Monarchs scored twice in overtime to defeat UConn for the title. ODU won their second consecutive NCAA title this season, riding a defense that allowed only five goals in the regular season and eight in their 20 games.
