The 2006 Terrapins opened with a shutout and ran off 11 more wins in a row, outscoring opponents 47-10 in that run. A loss to Duke halted the run, but Maryland won their next six games, four by shutout, to end the regular season at 18-1. A win and a loss in the ACC tournament moved the Terps to the NCAA tournament, where they were the top seed. A pair of clean sheets at home moved Maryland to the final weekend, where they defeated UConn 2-1 before defeating Wake in Winston Salem to capture the crown. It was the rubber match between the two teams. National Goalie of the Year Kathryn Masson led a defense that allowed only 18 goals all season for a national-best .70 scoring defense, despite the Terps facing the nation’s toughest schedule. Senior All-American and Honda honoree Paula Infante led a side that included All-Americans Susie Rowe, Tina Edmonds and Nicole Muracco who won their second consecutive national title.
