NCAA Champions

The 1994 Dukes won their opening two games by a combined score of 21-0 before a 2-2 tie at Penn State. A triple overtime win over ODU ignited a 10-game winning streak, but a 2-1 loss to UMass in a neutral site game sent the Dukes to their first defeat. Two shutout wins were followed by a 3-0 loss to UNC, but JMU closed the season out with a pair of wins. After a semifinal win in the CAA tournament, JMU fell to ODU in the rematch between the two. The Dukes entered the tournament as the #3 seed, posting 17 wins, with three wins and a tie coming against NCAA-bound teams. Behind Carole Thate, College Sports Magazine’s Athlete of the Year and the CAA Player of the Year, and All-Americans Jen Wilds, Renee Ranere, and Eileen Arnaldo, the Dukes won a school-record 20 games after winning three close games in NCAAs. They defeated Penn State in overtime in the second round, Northwestern 1-0 in the semis, and then needed strokes to defeat UNC in the finals to claim the trophy.
