NCAA 4th place

The 1989 Hawkeyes opened with three straight shutouts before a tie to Northeastern slowed the run. Six more wins, including four by shutout, were followed by another tie, but Iowa were still undefeated. Three consecutive shutouts started a nine-game winning streak to close the regular season at 18-0-2. Iowa entered the tournament with no losses and only two ties, both of which came against NCAA-bound teams; Iowa also defeated three teams that were tournament bound. The Big 10 regular season champions earned the 3rd seed in NCAA’s after a campaign that included first-team All-American honors for Cherie Freddie, Kristy Gleason, Erica Richards, and Aileen Trendler, and honorable mention nods for Missi Sanders and Erin Walsh, six players in total. The Hawkeyes suffered their first loss of the season with a 1-0 loss to eventual national champion UNC before losing to Northwestern 2-1 in the 3rd place game in the third match between the teams that season.
